What is a computer virus?
Think about a biological virus — the type that makes you ill. It is persistently nasty, keeps you from working normally, and frequently requires something powerful to eliminate it. Designed to replicate, computer viruses infect your files and programs, change the way your computer operates or stop it from working entirely.
In 2013, the botnet virus Gameover Zeus was found to utilize peer-to-peer downloading websites to disperse ransomware and commit fraud.
What does a computer virus do?
Some computer viruses are programmed to damage your computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk. Others simply replicate themselves or flood a network with traffic, which makes it impossible to execute any internet activity. Even less harmful computer viruses may significantly disrupt your system’s performance, sapping computer memory and causing frequent computer crashes.
